  1.                           Mouse Cursor Changer
  2.                           for Windows (TM) 3.0

  6. "Permanently" changes the shape of the system default mouse cursor. This
  7. program may be run once, then erased from your hard disk to conserve space.
  8. The original cursor setup is preserved and may be restored later by running
  9. a batch file.
  10.  
  11. Individual applications may change the shape of mouse cursor under
  12. Windows 3.0; however, the system default cursor is always the traditional
  13. right-handed arrow. It is possible for an application to use the debugging
  14. "hook" functions in Windows to effectively alter the system default cursor,
  15. but the disadvantages of this method are: (1) The "cursor changer" program
  16. must always be running, and (2) Microsoft doesn't recommend it.

  18. Farpoint Software's cursor changer works by creating a duplicate display
  19. driver file with the internally-coded cursor bitmap overwritten by the new
  20. user-selected bitmap (the hotspot is adjusted also). The SYSTEM.INI file is
  21. altered to use the new display driver. The original display driver is not
  22. touched, and the original SYSTEM.INI is renamed to SYSTEM.BAK. A batch
  23. file called RESETCSR.BAT will be created by the program. Running this batch
  24. file will restore the original SYSTEM.INI and delete the duplicate display
  25. driver.

  29. Steps to set your cursor shape:
  30.  
  31. (1) Create a directory on the hard disk. In this example, let's call the
  32.     directory C:\MCURSOR.
  33.  
  34. (2) Copy all the files in this archive into C:\MCURSOR.
  35.  
  36. (3) From the Program Manager menu in Windows, select "File : Run". Enter
  37.     C:\MCURSOR\CHOOSCUR as the command line.
  38.  
  39. (4) A dialog box ("Directory Selection") will appear. Enter C:\MCURSOR and
  40.     press the "Ok" button.
  41.  
  42. (5) The main program window will appear, with a list box containing the
  43.     names of all the cursor (*.CUR) files in the directory. As each selection
  44.     is single-clicked, the mouse cursor will change to the shape contained
  45.     in that file. At this point, the cursor has the currently selected shape
  46.     only while it is within the CHOOSCUR main window.
  47.  
  48. (6) Pick your preferred cursor. With this shape selected in the list box,
  49.     select "File : Prepare batch file" from the menu. Two batch files will
  50.     be created in the C:\MCURSOR directory. These files are named SETCSR.BAT
  51.     and RESETCSR.BAT.
  52.  
  53. (7) EXIT FROM WINDOWS. This is important. The next step will alter the
  54.     Windows initialization file SYSTEM.INI.
  55.  
  56. (8) Switch to default directory C:\MCURSOR.
  57.  
  58. (9) Run SETCSR.BAT. This will create two new files. In the Windows system
  59.     directory, NDISPLAY.DRV will be the new display driver. In the Windows
  60.     directory, SYSTEM.BAK will be kept as a copy of the original SYSTEM.INI.
  61.     Note that SETCSR.BAT makes use of the (included) programs NEWCSR.EXE and
  62.     CHANGINI.EXE.

  64. (10) Start Windows. Your selected cursor should now be the default cursor.

  68. If you want to restore the original cursor shape:
  69.  
  70. (1) EXIT FROM WINDOWS. Important.
  71.  
  72. (2) Switch to default directory C:\MCURSOR.
  73.  
  74. (3) Run RESETCSR.BAT. The original SYSTEM.INI will be restored from
  75.     SYSTEM.BAK and NDISPLAY.DRV will be deleted.

  77. (4) Start Windows.

  81. Note that you can erase everything in C:\MCURSOR once the change has been
  82. made. The only file needed to restore the original cursor is RESETCSR.BAT.
  83. However, this batch file is only a convenience; it only copies SYSTEM.BAK
  84. to SYSTEM.INI, then deletes SYSTEM.BAK and NDISPLAY.DRV.

  87. You can create your own cursor if you have "SDK Paint" from the Windows SDK
  88. or a similar cursor file generator. Cursor files must be 32 by 32 monochrome.
  89. CHOOSCUR will find and display all files in the specified directory that
  90. (a) have an extension of .CUR, and (b) contain one 32 by 32 monochrome bitmap.
  91. Don't forget to set the hotspot when making the cursor file.

  93. Note: SDK Paint seems to have the following bug: Occasionally, the cursor
  94. file will be saved with the size parameters set to 0,0 rather than 32,32.
  95. This will cause CHOOSCUR and NEWCSR to fail to recognize the cursor. The
  96. file can be fixed by simply loading it into SDK Paint and saving it again.

  99. This program has been found to work with all the display drivers normally
  100. supplied with Windows 3.0, and has also been tested with a few vendor-supplied
  101. display drivers. It performs its job by searching the display driver file for
  102. the bitmap pattern of the traditional arrow cursor. It is possible that there
  103. may be some vendor-supplied display drivers that do not use the exact bitmap
  104. that is normally found. In this case, NEWCSR will fail and an error message
  105. will be displayed during execution of the batch file.

  109. Notes on a few of the cursor files:
  110.  
  111. LEFTY:    Same as the default cursor, only mirror-imaged.
  112.           For left-handed people.
  113.  
  114. INVERTER: A full-size block of reverse-screen-color with a small cross
  115.           in the middle.
  116.  
  117. JOKE:     Looks the same as the default, but the hotspot is 32 pixels
  118.           to the upper right of the point of the arrow. Very confusing.
  119.  
  120. FINGER:   A complete hand, actually. The most artistic of the lot.
  121.           Even has a wristwatch.
  122.  
  123. FINGER_L: The other hand.
  124.  
  125. SKINNY:   The one I personally use.

  127. There are a total of 25 cursors currently supplied with this package.

  131. The Mouse Cursor Changer is released as free software. It is, however, still
  132. copyrighted material. It may be freely copied and distributed, provided that
  133. ALL the files in the original archive are distributed together and that no
  134. fee is charged except for a disk duplication fee not to exceed $5. It may
  135. NOT be included as an item bundled with other software and/or hardware and
  136. sold for profit.

  140. been taken to assure proper operation of these programs, it is always possible
